Elf Mastery
I received an interesting review on Goodreads today. Despite being my lowest review to date (2 stars), I found it rather complimentary and would like to share it.
Technically I liked everything Reil does. He avoids lots of fantasy tropes, develops characters beyond one-dimensional stereotypes and injects new twists on classic creatures of fantasy. The plot is fine. I'm fully aware this is a book for kids, I'd say maybe grades 5-7 if I had to guess. Yet despite good character growth and the promise of ongoing adventure in the trilogy, I feel like I've had enough after just the first book. I think this is just a case of personal taste. There aren't any flaws in Reil's writing and I think most people who enjoy fantasy and books written for younger audiences will like this. I listened to the book and the narrator was up to the task of bringing the characters to life. So low-scoring reviews aren't always bad, folks! Some people just have different tastes. Others have valid criticisms. Bryant
